DownForce

Commissioned as a programmer and consultant, I’ve been tasked with creating the core part of DownForce - Stunt Driving - the vehicle system.

I was responsible for the physics based chassis system, which needed to able to smoothly climb on walls, vertically, upside down, and on whatever angle the race track turned.

At the same time, the vehicles are able to jump, mid air, from one ramp to another, while not losing their previous ground reference.

To an onlooker, but also to the driver, it seems like each race surface has its own gravitational force. All with seamlessly smooth movement that is also stable on lesser framerates, like on low end mobiles.

Simultaneously, I was responsible for ensuring proper controller and touch (mobile) compatibility, while creating a custom camera system for adapting to the unusual ground angles.

After polishing, the movement feels extremely easy to control — arcade-like — and was crucial to the launch of this game.

A smaller demo of the “magnet” chassis concept is available here.
